About The Author

As a running back and kickoff returner for the Dallas Cowboys, a Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame inductee, and the first freshman, in 1982, to lead the Arizona State University Sun Devils in rushing in 30 years, Darryl Clack experienced a high volume of blows to the head experiencing his first concussion in the fifth grade where he experienced memory loss. He experienced another concussion in high school that included blurred vision, memory loss and headaches.  Again in college and many throughout his professional NFL career.

The repeated head trauma eventually caused cognitive deficits--an inclusive term used to describe impairment in an individual's mental processes that lead to the acquisition of information and knowledge, and drive how an individual understands and acts in the world.

On October 10, 2016, Clack was diagnosed with Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a rare blood disorder, under the autoimmune umbrella where blood clots form in small blood vessels throughout the body. The clots can limit or block the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the body's organs, such as the brain, kidneys, and heart. As a result, serious health problems can develop including memory loss, concentration, and fatigue.

Furthermore, on July 2016, he learned of his early-stage dementia diagnose.

With his early diagnosis, he felt obligated to bring awareness to both illnesses by telling his story, framed as his therapeutic journey. The book will help athletes, parents of athletes and anyone wanting to understand what could happen to a person who experiences blows to the head.  It will also explain how to detect symptoms of neurological damage, share tips on how athletes may protect themselves on the field, as well as inform readers of what measures to take to get help.

Darryl will also share how his faith was rebooted during his fight to live and give details of his road to physical and spiritual recovery.
